1921 - Originally formed by W.S. Macharg, H.W. Rennie and A.E. Lindsay, Machargs (known at the time as Macharg, Rennie & Lindsay Limited), soon became dealer for Willeys – Knight and Overland Whippet cars which were manufactured in America.  The company also handled various other makes of car including Delaunay Deville, Lancia, Citroen, Lea-Francis, Austin and Rolls Royce.1921

1932 - The company was appointed distributor for Standard Motor Company in Glasgow and the West of Scotland with control over 40 dealers.1932
1945 - Soon after World War II Machargs was appointed Triumph distributor and soon became the third largest Standard-Triumph distributor in Britain when Triumph was taken over by Standard.1945

1958 - The late fifties saw the purchase of the site in Finnieston Street where a building was erected for the storage of cars and parts.  This building was used for this purpose until the site at Castlebank Street was complete.1958
1966 - Castlebank Street officially opened and the service and parts departments were relocated to this site.1966
1972 - Due to the success and expansion of the company, provisions were made for an internal extension of Castlebank Street which completed in 1972.1972
1980s - A busy decade for the company, the 80’s witnessed various expansions, starting with a takeover by Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd in 1983 and the addition of a showroom to the premises at Castlebank Street.  In 1986 the existing showroom was refurbished and extended and a year later the site next door (1.8 acres) was purchased to make way for a used car display area, a valet bay and car and parts storage.1980s
1990s - Machargs continued to grow from strength to strength.  A former railway cutting next to Castlebank Street was filled making way for a new car storage area and ultimately in 1995 this was resurfaced to create another used car display area.  One year later Machargs acquired a new site in Royston Road, Glasgow to accommodate the expanding business.1990s
2006 - In July 2006 the Castlebank Street site relocated to less than 500 meters away in a custom built, three storey premises on South Street.  The new branch is the largest car showroom in Europe and is home to a wide variety motoring services including MOT centre, parts department, body shop, service department and car and van rental.2006
